Due to the increasing number of newly arrived people to the region from within Queensland, interstate and overseas, a need has been identified for a service to provide regional information to assist in their settlement process. There is a lack of services for newly arrived people to this region, and currently existing services have limited resources.
With the hardship and stress of moving to a new region without information, resources or support, new arrivals may experience social isolation and/or a breakdown of families and relationships and often decide to leave the region.
The short term goal of the Welcome Centre Project is to implement an information and referral service for new residents to the region, as well as opportunities to develop support networks. This may achieved via a comprehensive interactive website and a telephone service.
In the long term, the Welcome Centre aims to increase the level of service to provide a one-stop information and services facility that becomes the community hub for all new residents. This could be achieved through working collaboratively with local employers, councils, individuals, community services, government departments and local organisations.
