Youth Out Loud 1000 - December 2021

The Youth Out Loud project is starting to see projects and actions evolving from the data emerging out of the 750 conversations completed. While conversations area continuing with a targeted approach, we are starting to see some movement into the next steps for the project.

In September Create Mackay was initiated where young people and event planners came together to have an input in local events and activities.

A collaboration that has arisen out of the project is Strengthening Community Connections with Pioneer State High School. This project aims to strengthen the relationship between school and community and facilitate greater school attendance and participation.

Another partnership emerging is with Canelands Shopping Centre. They approached Mackay Regional Council regarding problems they were having with young people’s behaviour on Thursday late night shopping. Mackay Regional Council suggested that we could incorporate questions to identify ways the Shopping Centre might be able to combat these issues into the YOL1000 conversations with young people who frequent the Centre on Thursday nights. Data from these conversations showed increased concern amongst young people about the crime and drug use prevalent amongst their peers.

YOL1000 is now in the invigorating period of converting feedback to action, connections, and the filling of gaps in knowledge. It is well and truly on its way to making positive change for young people in the Mackay Region.
